Since 2017, Sargent, a Maine native, has\u00a0concurrently taught\u00a0writing at\u00a0The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.\u00a0His courses include Know Your Audience and\u00a0Magazine Master Class. &#8220;We write for our readers at\u00a0<em>Portland Monthly<\/em>, but we&#8217;re also a teaching magazine for top-notch interns,&#8221; he says. &#8220;It deepens the creative connection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Sargent has been awarded the Maine individual artist fellowship in literature and earned a Stonecoast MFA in creative writing.\u00a0<a id=\"LPlnk765812\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.portlandmonthly.com\/portmag\/about\/news-about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">He was awarded his Ph.D. in Creative Writing at Lancaster University, Lancaster, UK<\/span>.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0Sargent is the author of three books of poetry:\u00a0<em>Luftwaffe Snowshoes<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Blush<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Undertow<\/em>.\u00a0His screenplay\u00a0<em>Montebello Ice<\/em>\u00a0is under option at Gideon Films. His first\u00a0novel was\u00a0<em>Museum of Human Beings<\/em>. His second novel,\u00a0<em>The Boston Castrato,\u00a0<\/em>was nominated for the Man Booker\u00a0Prize in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><span>His third novel, <\/span><i>Red Hands<\/i><span> (Barbican Press, London, U.S. release 2023) is written in the voice of Iordana Ceausescu, who escaped the bloody 1989 revolution in Bucharest, Romania, with her young son to hide in Old Orchard Beach while the world searched for them. <\/span><i>Red Hands<\/i><span> was nominated for the Booker Prize.
