<\/a>Recently, 2 Degrees Portland, a non-profit organization connected to Creative Portland, created the event \u201cPortlyn\u201d in a \u201c3,600 sf Art Studio\u201d space,\u201d according to their Facebook page. Their m\u00e9tier is to be \u201ca network of people who want to sustain and grow the economy by welcoming creators, innovators, entrepreneurs, and thinkers to the area\u2013a sort of 21st century welcome wagon.\u201d<\/p>\nWe at Portland Magazine<\/em> would like to jump onto the wagon and welcome thinkers to the area. Snippets from members online, below head shots: \u201cI construct nightlife experiences, then I relax.\u201d \u201cI make radio.\u201d \u201cI connect people to art.\u201d<\/p>\n The event itself, \u201cPortlyn,\u201d was conducted at artist Jung Hur\u2019s 173 Neal Street Art Studio from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. As the 2 Degrees Facebook announces, \u201cWe have so many members that have moved here from Brooklyn\/NYC and we\u2019d like them all to have a place to connect with other Brooklyners and Portland.\u201d Sounds like the usual mixer. Then, here\u2019s where the wheels fall off\u2013a Facebook posting, since vanished, along the lines of, So many people from Brooklyn are moving here, maybe Portland should change its name to Portlyn<\/em>.<\/p>\n Okay, now what? You mean like in the Viceroy Club in The Second Best Marigold Hotel<\/em>, where the British expats have dinner with each other to revel in their Britishness? Or in A Passage to India<\/em>, where there\u2019s an insulated neighborhood of colonials who are terrified of the locals? Really, we natives aren\u2019t going to bite.<\/p>\n One of the questions posed in the Portlyn prospectus for the partiers to dish about was:\u00a0 \u201cWhat is your Brooklyn haven in Portland?\u201d Well, we\u2019ve already got the Old Port. We successfully shot down the Hooters opening downtown because we didn\u2019t want to look like somewhere else. So would it really be different if we celebrated how we looked like Brooklyn? We should be careful to observe the distinction between a creative economy and a derivative economy.<\/p>\n News flash: There were always creative types here in plaids and Bean boots\u2013long before the New York invasion. We\u2019re here because there\u2019s a here here\u2013something real. That\u2019s what we celebrate here in Portland.
