Sargent<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>Cyrus H.K. Curtis<\/strong> was just a high school student when the Great Fire of 1866 burned his beloved Portland down. His family\u2019s house was a pile of ashes. <\/span><span class=\"s3\">School was <i>out<\/i>. The plucky kid grabbed a local job as a newsboy before upshifting to Boston, then Philadelphia. He found he had a knack for publishing. At his peak, Curtis owned <em>The Philadelphia Inquirer<\/em>, <em>The Saturday Evening Post<\/em> (which he snapped up for a reported $1,000), <em>Ladies\u2019 Home Journal<\/em>, and <em>Holiday<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">If you make it that big, the next generation has it made.
