My great-grandmother, Florence Brooks Whitehouse, wrote a poem in response, and the amusing exchange was printed in a Portland newspaper.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><b><i>The Jonquil and the Rose<br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They tell a tale of suffrage,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the good old state of Maine<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is full of lively interest<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-18409\" src=\"http:\/\/www.portlandmonthly.com\/portmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/daffodil-1-e1588192656218-167x300.png\" alt=\"daffodil-1\" width=\"167\" height=\"300\" the close,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have worn the lady\u2019s jonquil,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But\u2014they\u2019ve voted for the Rose.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some say that men are foolish,<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Creator made them so<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To match up with the women\u201d;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we doubt if it is true!<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You see, while smiling blandly<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And politely keeping pose,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019ve been buttonholed with jonquils<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But\u2014they\u2019ve voted for the Rose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Most men are fond of flowers<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in preference draw no line,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To them the jonquil\u2019s \u201cbeautiful,\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the red, red rose is fine.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And so it can\u2019t be prejudice<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But conviction\u2014made them choose.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019ve worn the lady\u2019s jonquil,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But\u2014they\u2019ve voted for the Rose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Those ladies who have spent much time<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around the statehouse dome,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must now feel somewhat weary,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And may rest awhile at home.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor statesmen, nagged and badgered!<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have earned a long repose.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have worn the lady\u2019s jonquil,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But\u2014you\u2019ve voted for the Rose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><b><i>The Jonquil and the Rose (A Reply)<br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have noticed in your columns<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A most elucidating rhyme<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which must have kept the perpetrator<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working overtime.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It tells how at the Hearing<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which has just come to a close,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cvoters wore the Jonquil<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While they voted for the Rose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is pretty propaganda<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And though it isn\u2019t true to facts,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It shows the Anti-spirit<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: truth about the question<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is really quite immense<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For only nine and fifty<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voters proved their lack of sense<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By voting down the suffrage<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And 88 men chose<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To wear the Suffrage Jonquil<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While voting DOWN the Rose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In all we had a surplus<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of fifty votes to spare<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we count the House and Senate<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And our friends who stood firm there.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while the Antis seem so joyous<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That hadn\u2019t two to one<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They can\u2019t escape the knowledge<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That we won at fifty-one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We are proud to cede the Antis<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That nine disloyal \u201creps\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who renounced their party pledges<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To aid the Suffragettes<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the Democrats, from the cities,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which stand for rum and booze,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also state, quite frankly,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are honored, them to lose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With the Senate six and twenty<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the House four score and eight,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had a big majority<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From those who legislate.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in 1916 surely,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will bring the war to close,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the whole House wearing Jonquils<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Voting DOWN the
