{"id":20900,"date":"2022-02-16T14:36:02","date_gmt":"2022-02-16T19:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.portlandmonthly.com\/portmag\/?p=20900"},"modified":"2022-03-11T13:47:27","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T18:47:27","slug":"pandemic-victory-gardens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portlandmonthly.com\/portmag\/pandemic-victory-gardens\/","title":{"rendered":"Pandemic Victory Gardens"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"position: relative; padding-top: max(60%,326px); height: 0; width: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; border: none; width: 100%; height: 100%; left: 0; right: 0; top: 0; bottom: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/e.issuu.com\/embed.html?backgroundColor=%23efefef&amp;d=porltand_monthly_fm22&amp;hideIssuuLogo=true&amp;pageNumber=40&amp;u=portlandmagazine\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" sandbox=\"allow-top-navigation allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation allow-downloads allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-modals allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><b>New twist<\/b>\u00a0for a\u00a0<b>new war<\/b>.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">By Diane Hudson<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0Sue Sturtevant, former director of the Hill-Stead Museum<\/strong>\u00a0in Farmington, CT, with its 152 acres of gardens and grounds, wasn\u2019t looking for gardening advice so much as someone who could help build her a quarantine garden on a smaller scale at her home in Portland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI wanted a U-shaped, waist-high garden, and I thought<b>\u00a0<\/b><strong>Fresh Food Gardens<\/strong>\u00a0would be the perfect fit.\u201d Owner\u00a0<strong>Roberto Rodriguez<\/strong>, a Portland City Councilor-At-Large, is also Co-Interim Director of\u00a0<strong>Cultivating Community<\/strong>, a local non-profit that manages community gardens throughout the city, increasing plots in affordable housing locations and outreach to low-income gardeners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fresh Food Gardens filled Sturtevant\u2019s beds with rich soil and compost\u2014a mixture of seaweed and shells\u2014and then set up a series of maintenance visits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cThings\u00a0grew like crazy,\u201d Sturtevant says. \u201cYou cannot imagine the joy of bringing in fresh flowers once a week, or the satisfaction of looking out your kitchen window and seeing that spot of green and the colors of the flowers.
