What is this body as I fall asleep again?
\nWhat I pretended it was when I was small\u2013<\/p>\n

A crowded vessel, a starship or submarine
\nDark in its dark element, a breathing hull,<\/p>\n

Arms at the flanks, the engine heart and brain
\nPulsing, feet pointed like a diver’s, the whole<\/p>\n

Resolutely diving through the oblivion
\nOf night with living cargo. O carrier shell<\/p>\n

That keeps your trusting passengers from All:
\nSome twenty thousand times now you have gone<\/p>\n

Out into blackness tireless as a seal,
\nBlind always as a log, but plunging on<\/p>\n

Across the reefs of coral that scrape the keel\u2013
\nO veteran immersed from toe to crown,<\/p>\n

Buoy the population of the soul
\nToward their destination before they drown.<\/p>\n
