An intown “Castle in the Clouds.” No dwelling reverberates with Portland more than 300 Danforth Street—and Argentina!

A rare beauty spared from the flames of the Great Fire of 1866, this Italianate mansion reaches through the centuries to touch all who are dazzled by it. Designed in 1855 by noted architect Charles A. Alexander, it was built for merchant prince Samuel Spring.

From Danforth, it’s the left-hand member of near-twin residences. The house to the right was built for Samuel’s nephew Andrew. According to Greater Portland Landmarks documents, “both were financed by profits of the hide and tallow trade with Buenos Aires.” Who knew Portland had such a connection to Argentina?
