Before she was America’s Tall Ship, the USCG barque Eagle crept out of her nest in the Blohm+ Voss shipyards of 1936 Hamburg as a centerpiece of the Kriegsmarine. Christened the Horst Wessel—a tribute to a fallen Storm Trooper leader turned Nazi martyr—her June 13 launch was a meticulously staged spectacle of state power. Adolf Hitler “himself” looked on as Deputy Führer Rudolf Hess delivered the keynote. Wessel’s own mother broke the magnum of champagne over the hull.
