Kennebunkport novelist Margaret Deland was a member of my grandmother’s summer bridge club, where at the drop of a hatpin the card games were suspended and an occasional séance broke out. When I was arranging books in our family cottage library at Gooch’s Beach, a letter from Margaret dated December 27, 1936, fluttered to the floor.
